"I understand." She walked with her outside. (Occ: if powerplaying, tell me)
"So I guess this is where we part ways?"

The night was beautiful - there was a slight mist in the air, gently blurring the crescent moon, and it must have rained because the cobblestones were slick with water, and the moon's light bounced off the ground creating a softly glowing illusion.

The phrase "parting ways" made Arianne nervous and forced most of her happiness away. So that was it? She'd never see him again, if not for a chance encounter on the streets?
She liked him too much for that - the very idea of it made her instinctively reach out and grab his hand, gently, but desperately.
Very quietly, having a hard time getting the words out, she said, "I want to see you again. After this." And then, even more quietly, "I really... I really had fun. For the first time in a long time." She looked up into his face, and smiled, laughed nervously. "And I think that job... that singing job... I think it would work out for you." Then she become solemn once more. "I... You have been kinder to me, knowing me for an hour or two, than more people have been after knowing me for years. And I appreciate that a lot."
For some reason, the words that the waitress had said - "If that didn't earn you two a kiss, then I don't know what would." - echoed prominently in her mind.

Matthias clutched her hand. "When I meant parting ways, I only meant for the night. I AM taking up that job offer, you know." He then felt the need to hold her. He had never felt this way about anyone before.
........then he remembered. He was still a thief. A common, petty thief. He couldn't just change in one day. Officials would attempt to track him down. This is why he never stayed in one place for to long. But he didn't want to be a thief anymore. That doesn't change his past sins, though, he thought. He wanted to stay there though. To be a bard. He was fighting with himself in his mind. He felt like he was caught in a web.
He turned around. "I.....I mean.........I'm sorry......I'm still just a thief against my will, after all...."

Arianne shuddered involuntarily. This sounded so familiar. But last time... didn't end well.
Matthias would be different. She vowed this to herself and, silently, to him. He would be different.
"Not anymore," she said, and without even realizing what she was about to do, she stood on her toes (she was rather short, after all) and pressed her lips against his in a quick kiss.

"A.....Arianne...." he said, about to fall to his knees. He felt like he was about to break down in tears, but he refused.
"........it's been a long time since I've felt affection....." he said.
He stood up fully, renewed. "........tomorrow's a new day, though. A new life. Thank you, Arianne." He smiled.

She smiled too, but she could feel her throat closing up and her eyes stinging with the preamble of tears. She tried to shoo them away, but she couldn't. Instead, her voice was chopped up with small sobs when she spoke. "You have n-no id-dea," she said, "how m-much that means t-to me."
She hastily drew her arm up to wipe away the wetness in her eyes, but the tears were flowing down her cheeks before she could catch them.
"Damn memory," she muttered, without meaning to.
What was it she had said, that year? That fight?
" You're nothing more than a parasite, you know! Leeching what others rightfully earned from them! Nothing more than a parasite!"
And he had torn her hand away, and ran out the door, and she remembered that her brother was standing in the kitchen and shaking his head, wet-eyed, over his cousin, and Arianne had stood there and watched him go, and finally decided that it was over. She had lost.
Not this time. She shakily promised that, again, to herself, and didn't bother to wipe any more tears from her eyes.
ooc: You probably recognise that quote. Don't worry - I've worked this all out with the player of the character who first typed that. It's all set.

Matthias wiped the tears off her face. "Sadness doesn't suit you...." He stopped for a second.
What memory? He thought. He didn't dare ask her though, it wasn't any of his business.

Arianne sniffed. "I was never the pretty one anyway," she said, but a small smile fell across her face.
She hesitated. "What you said... about changing? You meant it?" She gripped his hand, feircely. "You promise?"
Somewhere, in the back of her mind, she realized how oddly she was behaving. She had only kissed a boy once before, when she was sixteen, and then she had known him for... ages before that kiss happened. And now, here she was - she kissed Matthias (even though it was more of a short, friendly kiss than a romantic one - but she did feel significantly romantic while doing it), not even knowing him for a day, and now she was holding his hand, too.
Her brother would have thrown a fit. And Lord forbid what her father would have done. Or her mother!
She felt self conscious and not conscious at all at the same time. She couldn't help feeling that she only felt so aware of it because she liked Matthias - she couldn't help thinking about it.
She reached up and wiped her eyes again, sniffing. "I'm sorry," she said, apologeticly. "I'm acting like a child." She felt her cheeks redden slightly. Had she ever blushed this much in a few hours in her entire life?

"You're not acting like a child. Crying is natural. Don't worry about it......." He said, trying to comfort her. "And what do you mean, never the pretty one? You shouldn't bring yourself down like that, you're beautiful. And I swear I meant it when I said I wanted to change."

Arianne sighed. As she did, one last, small sob escaped through her breath. "Thank you," she said. "For trying to comfort me. YOu have no idea... how much it means that you're going in a different direction." She paused, thoughtfully. "Even though I don't know you very well yet, it still makes me happier than I've been in a long time."
She stopped - considered telling him the story, what had happened, but she stopped herself. No. Not yet. He wasn't ready. She wasn't ready. It was too soon.
She laughed, dryly. "And as for the beautiful thing... thank you for trying to reassure me, but what I say is true. Beautiful is big blue eyes and red hair, and wanting to grow up and be a noblewoman. Not thin brown eyes and dirty blonde hair, and wanting to grow up and sing and join the army. But it's alright," she added quickly. "I don't care. Bards don't have to be pretty, and neither do soldiers."

"Well you don't HAVE to be good looking, but when I look at you, it just seems so natural. And besides, you're thinking along the lines of stereotypes." He smiled at her. "You're quite the exception."

She turned redder, then looked up at him. "You," she said, "are very handsome too."
At first, she hadn't really thought so - not that he was ugly, by any stretch, but she just simply hadn't noticed. But now... he was.

"Are you just flattering me?" He laughed, jokingly.
He never really cared about his looks. Never did.

"No," she said quietly, simply. "I don't- "
But her sentence was cut off as she stifled a yawn.
