She looked down, and suddenly felt embarrassed as she realized how silly this was going to sound. A flush colored her face as she looked up and said tentatively, "Well... I thought... if you could sing, or play, then... maybe you could do that for a living."
That sounded awful. Stupid. She shut her eyes. Even after she herself could barely make anything and was certainly much better than Matthias at playing and singing - no offense at all intended to him, though. Even after he didn't seem too interested at all in it. Not a lot of people can become ministrels, even less, sucessful ones. You need to have at least a little talent, and what you don't have in talent needs to be evened out with hard work and devotion. Few have that. And she had just thought...
Stupid.
"Silly, really..." she said quietly. "I don't know why I thought..."

"Silly? Am I that bad?" he said, laughing a little. "I would actually enjoy that type of living. But........I don't think I'm cut out for it." He felt a little disappointed at himself.
He thought, (I seem to be second rate at a lot of things....) He sighed.

"No!" she said quickly. "No, that's not what I meant. Not at all." She gave a sigh. "It's just that one in a hundred people become a ministrel. It wasn't very smart of me just to assume, when I had only known you for a few minutes."
She glanced at her instrument again. "I don't even know how good or bad you are at it, yet. If you want I could play the melody again, and I could sing with you. I'd sing louder, so people couldn't even hear you. If you're willing to give the option one more shot." She looked up at him.

"..........right. One more time. Just one question: Do you know the notes to this one particular song, that tells of a man adrift at sea for 20 years? I don't remember the name of the piece, but I like the lyrics to it. If you do, I can sing it by myself, ignorant of the people around me." He looked hopefully at her.

Her eyes lit up. "Yes, yes, I do!" she said. "I love it. I used to sing it a lot when I lived in Thala."
She took up her instrument and began to play the melody, smiling softly as she did. This song reminded her of better times. It always had. Always would.

Matthias started to sing: To the one that I love, my journey has begun When our eyes meet once more there will me peace The taste of your lips the warmth of your touch again, forever, two souls as one
Seems like forever that my eyes have been denied Home - I'm dreaming of home I've been twenty years away from all I ever knew to return would make my dreams come true
Seasons of sorrow have stolen all my years I miss the rolling hills of my land I've been through battles and cried a sea of tears but the tide is changing, and with it all my fears
Seems like forever that my eyes have been denied Home - I'm dreaming of home I've been twenty years away from all I ever knew to return would make my dreams come true
(occ: ^ real lyrics from a real song, actually)

ooc: Can you give me some idea of the sound of his voice? Like, does he suck or is he really good? I don't want Arianne messing up her reaction, you know.

ooc: It's good, but that's just me, and I love this band. It's not hardcore screaming or deathmetal though. It's pretty smooth.

Arianne looked up without ending the song. He certainly wasn't as awful as he seemed to think he was. In fact, he was very good.
She played a chord and looped the song around to begin again. "Once more," she whispered, and this time she sang too. She couldn't play this song and not sing it!

He sang the song once more, but this time in unison with Arianne.
Serene, he thought. He always liked this song.

THeir voices - Arianne's high and light, nearly wipsy, and Matthias's low and smooth - worked well together. People soon turned their heads and listened to their song, and once the two had finished, there was some applause. Three people even came and each put a silver on their table.
The waitress, who had taken their orders earlier, stopped by their table and smiled. "Nice work," she said. "Feel free to go up to the stage - if you can call it that - if you want. Don't think the boss'll mind if you want to make people stay longer." She turned to leave, then on a second thought, she turned and looked at them with a mischievous smile. She leaned down, putting her face closer to theirs. "If that didn't earn you two a kiss," she said quietly, barely holding laughter within her voice, "I don't know what would."
She straightened, winked at them, and left.
EDIT> Just clarifying the "stage". It's more of a small wooden platform near the back of the building, for performers.

Arianne gave a small, sharp intake of breath (just a step below an outright gasp) and immediately turned bright red.
The frightening part was, the idea of kissing Matthias didn't really sound so awful. That had almost never happened to her before, and she had only known Matthias for a few hours. If that.
Arianne was normally very polite and very conservative, and the comment threw her off greatly. She looked after the waitress in shock for a moment, then quickly drew her eyes to the table and blushed (blushed brightly), embarrassed but, in an odd way, very pleased.
