The watchman, who, with the assistance of a very high tower and some odd-looking glasses, could see for miles upon miles around, returned to his shift after lunch. And was greeted with a very, very unpleasant surprise.
As soon as he raised the glasses to his eyes, he saw that ALL OF ARANIA was surrounded by soldiers. ALL of the country. Surrounded. By thousands - even millions - of Vorian soldiers.
And then, in a split second, all at the same time, the watchman saw every one of these soldiers charge forward in an attack.
He dropped the glasses and fumbled for the torch. He grabbed it and lit the huge fire at the tip of the tower, to alert the people of the attack. Then he carelessly threw the whole torch into the fire and charged down the stairs, screaming at the top of his lungs, "WE'RE UNDER ATTACK!! ARANIA IS UNDER ATTACK!!"
High Aranian Farin was one of the first to hear him, and grabbed his shoulders tightly. "What?" he cried, voice rough and panicked. "What did you say?"
"Vorian soldiers... We're c-c-c-completely surrounded, sir," the watchman stuttered, eyes wide with shock.
Farin's own eyes widened. He understood well enough; he needed to know no more, right now. Already he knew that the soldiers must be rushing through the streets of every city, every cornfeild, like blood through veins. He let go of the man's shoulders and turned around briskly, running through the halls and shouting orders. "GET THE GENERALS READY!!! DISPATCH ALL TROOPS!!! NOW!!"
Between these orders, he bit his lip with vigorous worry. Many would die in the next few days, he knew. Arania itself might even be one of them.
