Kaken just kept on walking. "Kid, how long is it gonna take you to realize some things you can't just go rushing into." Kaken said, still walking, "From how old you look, i have had about 20 years more experiance than you. There ain't no way you could beat me now. You want to kill me that bad, then just train. Then I can slice you head off with it being a prober challenge. Plus you would probably have more gold." Kaken chuckled to himself and walked.

"I guess all your meaningless little life focuses on is gold." He sighed.
Matthias stopped and stood up. He glared at Arianne.
"You shouldn't have followed me." He ran into the nearby woods, taking a long path around Kaken to Queri.

Arianne, furious and even more hurt than before, shouted after him, "I WASN'T DAMN FOLLOWING YOU! I WAS GOING HOME!!"
And then she dropped her hands to her sides, and she stood there, dazed, because life had whacked her in the back of the head and she hadn't even seen it coming. She vowed, vaguely, in the back of her mind, to look out more carefully next time.
I should have just left him, she thought, angrily. And then, more helplessly than angrily, I wish I hadn't even met him. I wish I had never even left Thala.
Too late for that now...

Then, on a second, furious impulse, she added, "AND YOU TALK ABOUT HIS MEANINGLESS LIFE? YOU RISKED YOUR DAMN LIFE FOR A FEW SILVERS!"
She didn't know if he heard her. But she hoped he did.
She sat down in the grass to think. Arianne, who, although the thought had not yet crossed her mind, was a girl with not a single gold to her name, and didn't even have her instrument anymore to make more money.

It was nearly an hour later, after Arianne had just sat and rested, before she realized that she had, literally, nothing left.
When she realized she had no money, she was horrified.
When she realized that she had left her instrument in the inn, she nearly cried.
She remembered what she had told Matthias, yesterday night: "A voice is nothing without music..."
She had no music. Only a voice. And a voice is nothing without music.
She wondered wether to go back to the city or go home, to Thala. Even in Thala, there wasn't much left for her. Her brother was gone. There was Erryn, but... she and Erryn hadn't been on good terms when she had left.
There was even less for her in Queri, but if she went home now, she would be a failure. She had boasted and bragged and been overconfident, talking about how she was going to make it in the big city, how she was going to become a famous singer. Most of it was joking, but a little of it wasn't.
Shame, to go home after that. Go home with nothing.
But is it any better than starving to death in Queri, completely alone? And besides, Matthias had gone in the direction of Queri. She didn't want to run into him again. What had happened to him, anyway? Why had he seemed so... angry with her, all of the sudden? He had seemed so kind last night, and it had seemed genuine...
But maybe she was only seeing was she wanted to see, then. Maybe his intentions were different. Maybe she was wrong.
She was wrong. She had been wrong. That's it. It's over.
She dragged herself up, set herself at a fast pace, and left for Thala.
