Arianne turned, and saw that Erryn was gone. She figured that he would leave, hearing this. It was alright. She probably would have, too, if she were him.
"No," she said. "No, it has nothing to do with you. He is my cousin... and he's a theif himself. We... fought.... often, about it. And... just before I left... there was a bad fight." She lowered her eyes, shuddering involuntarily at the memory. "I don't think either of us have gotten over it yet."
He's probably still stealing, she thought, coldly.

"At any rate, I didn't mean to stir bad memories again." He replied, slightly guilty.

She shook her head. "I think they would have been stirred no matter what," she said softly. Her eyes stung, slightly. She told herself that no, she would NOT cry, not here, not now.
It would be alright. Erryn would learn eventually. THings would be better eventually.

Erryn leaned against the door in the next room over, his arms crossed. He bit his lip. She doesn't know that I've stopped, he thought.
He lowered his eyes. How could she think that I would keep stealing after what happened? After her brother (ooc: A name is very much needed for this guy) nearly got taken because of it?
Maybe because I did....

Matthias thought, "I shouldn't even have opened my mouth." He looked down at the ground.

Arianne frowned. She could see that he felt badly, even though he hadn't done anything wrong.
"Please," she said, "it isn't your fault. You've done nothing wrong."
She hesitated, momentarily, then hugged him loosely, with one arm, only on the side that wasn't hurt. "I'm just happy that everything is alright now," she said, as much to herself as to him.

Erryn heard the strange tone in his cousin's voice and peered out of the door. He raised his eyebrows at the sight of Arianne with her arm around the man. Arianne was normally so conservative, so careful in relationships.
Could she have gotten so close to someone so quickly, he wondered?

"........so humble." He got up completely. "But this wound is nothing. I've had far worse. So don't waste any worries on me."
He felt he didn't belong there, for some reason.

Arianne got to her feet and stared into his face. She had the odd, frantic feeling that if she let him go, she would never see him again. In her lifetime, if there was one thing she'd learned, it was that people who leave you once will leave you again, and again, and again.
But what could she do? If he left again, then he wasn't worth it anyway. She shouldn't feel so bad over him. She was turning into those girls, those girls who melted at everything, who she had despised so much before. She had to pull herself together.
She smiled faintly. "If you are sure. There's always a place for you here if you need it. And stop by the doctor - ask around for him, he'll find you. Just let him look at it again."
She tried to hold that small, vague smile, but it was wavering, and it was hard.

"I won't need a doctor. I'll live." He looked at her. "..........I think I should take my leave here. Keeping me around will be of no profit. And please........if you're thinking of following me, don't. It's not a matter of what I think of you, it's a matter of your safety. I think your cousin would agree with me there. And besides, it's not like this is the end; I can guarantee this won't be our last meeting."

Goodbye again... she thought, vaguely. She turned her eyes aside, unwilling to look up. She wanted to believe that she would see him again, but it didn't work. Just like she couldn't imagine seeing her brother again, or being as close to Erryn as she once was... or even being able to hold a respectable conversation with him again.
"I... I like you very much, Matthias," she said, softly, still keeping her eyes down. "Probably more than you like me, but I don't say that to make you pity me, or anything of the sort. It's just that I very much want to see you again, sometime soon. But if you don't want to see me, then that's fine." She bit her lip. "It's fine," she whispered, again.
If she had been able to say that to so many other people; that "I know you don't want to see me, and it's fine"; she would have been able to spare so much.
"And," despite herself, more words were spilling out, and she found herself looking up and making eye contact, something that she rarely did when she was upset like this. It was like a revalation - a surge of power, or perhaps just the absense of helplessness. "And I want you to know that I do know that I might have been..." She groped for a word. "...overly-friendly.... and I'm sorry, because perhaps it has made you uncomfortable, and I just didn't notice. I think I'm just... desperate." She lowered her eyes again. "I'm just desperate for.... someone, I think."
And she took a breath, and let it out, and said, in a much quieter voice, "and the last thing I want you to know is that if you really do like me, and you do want to see me again... know that I don't care about the damn officials." And then, more feircely, "Know that!"
After all of that, she was breathless. She doubted she had said quite so many words (not in song) all at once in a very long time, and never such bold things.

He nodded. "Well. They haven't found a way to kill me yet. And no, it's not your friendliness that drove me way." He paused. "It's me."
He started walking to the door. ".......and one more thing. Know that I've never felt like this about anyone before. Know that." He opened the door.

She stood and watched him, with her arms crossed, and her mouth slightly open, and her eyebrows pushed together like eyebrows do when their owners are sad or concerned, or confused, all of which Arianne was.
"I haven't either," she said slowly, as if she herself was just realizing it. "I haven't either."

Erryn listened through the door.He didn't have to see them to know the expression on Arianne's face, and he was glad that he didn't have to see it. He felt a stab of hurt of his cousin; once again, she was having someone pulled away from her.
But then again, this man, Matthias, told her that he cared about her. Personally, Erryn wasn't sure if it was true or not, but it would no doubt help Arianne a little bit. He hoped.
And if, after that, he just left her and never came to see her again... well, Erryn would be furious. To say the very least.

Arianne gasped as she saw the soldiers cresting the hill, through the open door. THey came like a wave - there were so many of them! Just in the fields of Thala! In the nowhere lands!
"Vorians!" she cried, and instictively her hand went up to point, just for a split second before she whirled around and searched the room wildly. Her old sword. Where was it, where was it, that damn thing?! Her heart leapt as her eyes fell on it. There, mounted on the wall. Maybe her brother had put it there. She reached for it and pulled it down, grasping it's handle firmly in her hands, unsheathing it visciously and holding it in battle stance. "Erryn!" she cried. "Erryn, stay in there! For God's sake, hide, Erryn!"
It was too late for her and Matthias to hide, now. They had probably already seen them. But Ariane wouldn't have hidden anyway - she always had wanted to be a soldier, had she not? And this was it!
Then she turned, and she saw Matthias standing there, and she remembered his arm - that wound was still so fresh, so new! Just the other day! "Matthias," she said, "your arm..." She didn't know what to do; what could be done? She knew him enough to know that he wouldn't leave and just let her do the fighting. But he would never be able to fight with that shoulder... not well, at least, and that alone could get him killed. "You can't fight like this."
